Rainbows Program
Dear Parent(s),
Everyone knows that a child does not come to school and leave his/her feelings outside the classroom door. Quite the opposite, all emotions, positive and negative, come with the child. When something significant happens within the family, all members are affected. Consequently, when a loss of a spouse through death or divorce occurs, it has a profound effect on the children it touches.
When a parent dies or a divorce takes place, the child experiences complex emotions associated with grief. Grieving children find it extremely difficult to verbalize those feelings. Unresolved grief impacts both academic achievement and behavior.
We have some sensitive, caring and trained adults who have agreed to help these children through the grief. If your child is part of a single parent family or a stepfamily, this will be an opportunity for him/her to share with a compassionate adult on the outside what is happening in the inside.
Peer support groups will be comprised of 3-5 children and an adult who is trained in the RAINBOWS program. There are four levels which cover grades K-8 and the groups will run for ~19 weeks, beginning the first week in November. Groups will meet during lunch. The actual meeting day will be decided by each group adult facilitator based on availability and number of registrations received.
Please fill out the permission slip, including both your signature and your child’s, if you would like them to participate in a RAINBOWS support group. Groups will be formed on a first come, first serve basis. Please return your permission slip as soon as possible, but no later than September 30th.
